SEA KELP The seaweed, Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) grows in abundance in the inter-tidal zone on the west facing coast of Norway and Northern Europe. It feeds through its fronds (leaves) enabling it to extract components from seawater and concentrate them. This concentration process means that Kelp contains more vitamins and minerals than any other foodstuff and explains why it is such a popular food. The Benefits of Kelp Thyroid problems—Kelp has a very high natural iodine content which can help those with low thyroid function. Skin, nail and hair health—due to the vitamin and mineral contents. Antibiotic—has been shown to increase the contractile force of the atria, making it a good heart tonic. Radioactivity protection—helps to protect the body from the effects of radiation by preventing absorption of radioactive elements. Others—such as poor digestion, flatulence and obstinate constipation have been helped with Kelp supplementation. Properties Vitamins—contains 9 of the 13 vitamins. Minerals—contains 8 major elements, 8 trace elements and up to 17 other elements. Iodine is the most important of the mineral elements and is essential for the production of the hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine which are required for the maintenance of the metabolic rate, cellular metabolism and the integrity of connective tissue.
