LUTEIN EYE COMPLEX WITH BILBERRY Sight is the most valued of the senses. Unfortunately, because there are so many everyday causes, and we are all living longer, loss of sight is a common occurrence, particularly amongst the elderly. Macular degeneration, of which two varieties exist, and cataract formation account for nearly all cases of age-related sight loss. “Dry-form” macular degeneration is where a small, brightly coloured spot, at the back of the eye, the macula lutea, fails to filter out ultra violet light. As a result, the sensitive light cells behind it become damaged and a ‘dark spot’ develops in the middle of the field of vision. The cumulative effects of a lifetime’s exposure to UV radiation in sunlight often result in ‘age related’ or ‘dry form’ macular degeneration. “Wet form” macular degeneration involves weakening of the very fine blood vessels that criss-cross the retina. The retina is a light-sensitive layer that lines the rear half of the eye interior. Fluids leaking from these porous blood vessels obstruct vision, hence the term ‘wet form’ macular degeneration. Smoking and poor diet are the major risk factors, as they result in weakened, unhealthy blood vessels. The third leading cause of sight loss is cataract formation, which affects nearly 50% of people ages 75-80. A cataract is a yellow-brown clouding of the lens, at the front of the eye. This effect is a result of proteins cross-linking, so the fibres of the lens become abnormally arranged, a process that occurs increasingly in all tissues as we age. Heavy metal and oxidative stress from smoking, poor sugar metabolism (in diabetes) and excessive sunlight exposure are the most common causes. The Benefits of Lutein Eye Complex with Bilberry Our comprehensive formula contains all the nutrients needed to maintain and raise levels of glutathione, the eyes’ most important antioxidant. Other antioxidants improve night vision and help the eyes adapt to changes in light conditions, beneficial to both macular degeneration and cataract patients. As heavy metal accumulation is associated with degenerative eye disease, nutrients to lower lead and cadmium levels and strengthen the lens tissue are added. Other ingredients improve the function of weak blood vessels and aid circulation to the eye. Main uses:
Slowing macular degeneration, both “dry” and “wet” forms
Slowing cataract development
Prevention of degenerative eye conditions in high risk people, for example: diabetics, smokers and people working outdoors or driving for long periods.
Properties Natures Aid Lutein Eye Complex with Bilberry contains many complimentary nutrients that together, ensure healthy blood flow to the eye, raise antioxidant levels and strengthen eye tissues. Lutein, a brightly coloured antioxidant carotenoid, is found exclusively in the macular and lens tissues, bathing cells in protection from UV light. Those with the highest dietary levels are 50% less likely to develop cataracts and 57% less likely to develop macular degeneration. Unfortunately, levels decline with age and poor diet. Bilberry, rich in substances called anthocyanosides, protects both the retina and lens tissue from oxidative damage, restores elasticity to blood vessels and also makes rhodopsin. Beta Carotene, Alpha Carotene, Cryptoxanthin and Zeaxanthin are other carotenoids with various roles. These include making rhodopsin, a pigment essential for good night visions and helping the eye adapt to changes in light, plus it has antioxidant properties. Vitamin C adds to the antioxidant status and it is known that deficiency is a risk factor. Vitamin E also adds its antioxidant properties to the fatty tissues of the eye, such as the nerve endings. Low blood levels of vitamin E is also a risk factor for cataracts. Vitamins B2, B3 and B6 preserve existing levels of glutathione. Zinc, a very common deficiency in both the elderly and those with poor diets, makes enzymes essential for healthy visual function. Zinc also helps remove heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium, found in the lens tissue of smokers. Copper helps balance the copper-depleting effects of the zinc and aids new collagen formation, important in the integrity of blood vessels and lens tissue. Selenium is used to make glutathione, the most important antioxidant to the eye. Glutathione levels diminish with age and selenium intake is generally poor in the UK. Rutin is a member of the bioflavonoid family, and is especially well known for reducing the number and size of pores in blood vessels walls to reduce leaking of fluids. Contra-indications / Precautions At the recommended dosage, none of the ingredients are associated with any side effects or toxicity, except for copper, which should never be taken by people with Wilsons disease. Vitamin E slightly increases the risk of bleeding gums in those taking aspirin. Zinc and copper bind to several antibiotics, reducing their absorption. Taking this products at least 2 hours apart from antibiotic medication eliminates this problem. Zinc may also bind with the anticoagulant Warfarin, reducing its absorption. Again, taking this product at least 2 hours apart from warfarin eliminates this problem. Why Choose Natures Aid Lutein Eye Complex with Bilberry? Each tablet provides:
