OMEGA-3 FISH OIL LIQUID
To develop and function normally every single cell of the body requires a regular supply of nutrients and the brain and nerve cells are certainly no exception. Throughout our lives the brain uses essential fatty acids (EFAs) as a source of fuel and materials for building. Fish has long been referred to as brain food but it is only in recent times that research has finally started to begin to understand the many ways in which EFAs, especially those found in oily fish, affect normal brain function. The benefits of oily fish are attributed to the unique nature of the polyunsaturated essential fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docohexaenoic acid). Properties
Fish Oil is derived from various fish such as pilchards, sardines, mackerel, herring and salmon. It contains a much higher percentage of EPA and DHA than Cod Liver Oil but only low levels of vitamins A and D thus enabling individuals to take higher quanities. EPA and DHA are omega-3 fatty acids, which are converted in the body to produce prostaglandins. Prostaglandins affect a wide variety of physiological processes due to their modulating effect on the action of hormones. It is thought that EPA and DHA may lower serum triglycerides, reduce the risk of blood clots and irregular heartbeat, have anti-inflammatory properties and support the immune system. EPA is said to open the ‘gateways’ of neural communication whilst DHA provides a medium through which messages pass and is essential for normal brain development in children.
Contra-indications / Precautions
People on anticoagulant therapy such as warfarin should not exceed the recommended usage rate.
